Teachers+Students+Facebook= ???

I just saw on our 10 o clock news that Missouri has passed a law that bans teachers and students from being friends.

That's the main part of the law- here are the other two parts:

"It also bans registered sex offenders from serving on local school boards and strengthens criminal background checks on school bus drivers. "
               ----I think this is great.

"But one provision of the bill -- section 160.069 -- also prohibits teachers in elementary, middle or high schools from establishing, maintaining or using a "work-related website unless it is available to school administrators and the child's legal custodian, physical custodian, or legal guardian," effective January 1."
----not sure what this even means? I am possibly going to launch a website for my classroom and parents- I'm assuming that by sharing this site with my principal it's okay to have?

What are your thoughts on this topic?

  1. Interesting...I am 100% in agreement regarding teachers and students NOT being friends on FaceBook. I actually deleted a colleague from my page because she friends her CURRENT students (5th graders!). Keeping in mind they aren't even 13 which is the "minimum age"....I wasn't having that. I ended up making my facebook 100% private so I'm not searchable.

I wonder if the other part is about blogs or whatnot....so you can't complain about work unless that site is open to your admin and parents.
